Abstract

Rupture of the posterior ventricular wall after mitral valve replacement is a rare and lethal complication.
I experienced one case of the ventricular rupture, so, report with review of literatures.
A 50-year-old woman patient had severe mitral valve regurgitation. At mitral valve replacement, a 31mm Ionescu-Shiley valve was inserted without incident. In the intensive care unit, the patient¢¥s condition was satisfactory for 7 hours. Suddenly there was a massive bleeding through the pericardial drainage tube, and blood pressure was declined. Regardless of intensive care and infusion of cardiotonics, the patient died due to uncontrolled bleeding.
Rupture site was posterior mid portion of the left ventricle (Type III)
